Jennifer Gallyot, Operations Coordinator and Marine Ecologist at Marine Ecological Surveys Limited (part of Gardline), has been coordinating survey operations and scheduling projects for more than two and a half years. She has specialist skills as a benthic taxonomist working with a range of benthic and epibenthic samples. Jennifer has adopted several roles within MESL ranging from Archivist to Researcher.
KEY EXPERIENCE
- Responsible for the organisation of survey operations including staff allocation, equipment maintenance, obtaining permits and dispensations, coordinating mobilisation/demobilisation of surveys and liaising with clients and contractors
- Experienced surveyor proficient in a range of on-board marine sampling techniques including beam trawl, Hamon grab, day grab and underwater photography in intertidal, estuarine and coastal habitats
- Responsible for Quality Assurance relating to survey operations
- Production of Health and Safety documents and Risk Assessments
- Scheduling a broad range of task areas including surveys, laboratory work, reporting and tenders; production of GANTT charts (Microsoft Project) used in target delivery, tracking progress, completion prediction and cost effective timings
- Sample collection, separation, identification and enumeration of fauna from intertidal and subtidal projects around the UK. Experience spans projects from research, oil & gas, aggregate and renewable sectors.
- Identification of fish and invertebrates onboard epibenthic monitoring surveys around the Inner and Outer Thames region
- Fish gut analysis for research on the ecosystem services of Sabellaria spinulosa reefs
- Cockle processing for ongoing monitoring of commercial Cerastoderma edule beds
- Production and maintenance of company library using Endnote and Reference Manager software
- Sourcing peer reviewed and grey literature for commercial and research projects, such as the study for Natural England ‘Meeting the MPA Network Principle of Viability: Feature specific recommendations for species and habitats of conservation importance
- Literature reviews and report writing for both commercial and research projects
- Contributions to both the East Coast and Humber Regional Environmental Characterisations (REC) on the distribution of marine mammals
- JNCC accredited Professional Marine Mammal Observer
- Production of anatomical illustrations for species such as zooplankton for taxonomy workshops
- Experience using biological database software ‘UNICORN’
