Lisa Grubb, Laboratory Supervisor and Senior Benthic Taxonomist at Marine Ecological Surveys Ltd (part of the Gardline Group of Companies), has over 4 years experience of identification of marine benthic fauna. She is also Lab Tutor, and is responsible for the training and development of staff.
KEY EXPERIENCE
- Lisa has been involved in the sample collection, separation, identification and enumeration of fauna from intertidal and subtidal projects around the UK. Her experience spans projects from research, oil & gas, aggregate and renewable sectors.
- Lisa is experienced in intertidal, estuarine and coastal habitat surveys, and has participated in offshore surveys. She has experience in grab-sampling, ‘scientific’ beam trawling, commercial otter trawling and underwater video / camera work. Lisa’s identifying experience includes marine benthic and zooplankton.
- Since joining in 2006 as a trainee, Lisa has worked up to a senior level within the company, and now supervises one of the labs at MESL. She is involved in the training of staff in identification, checking reference collections and final data, and also checking samples identified by other members of staff. She is responsible for project management and scheduling in the lab, and duties include logging samples into the database, sieving, sorting and identification.
- Lisa has attended NMBAQC expert workshops in 2008 and 2010, at the Dove Marine Laboratory. These courses covered Spionidae, Terebellomorpha, Scaleworms, Hesionidae, Lumbrineridae, Nephtyidae, and Cumacea,. She has participated in NMBAQC ring tests and has submitted own samples for analysis to further her training and development.
- Lisa has been involved in the MESL Taxonomy School, assisting Dr Igor Jirkov in his Terebellomorpha workshop, and teaching at the MESL Summer School in 2011. She also participated in a Phyllodocidae workshop held at MESL by Fredrik Pleijel and Arne Nygren in the same year.
- In 2010, Lisa attended a course in Scanning Electron Microscopy at Plymouth University, to aid in the identification of planktonic larvae, specifically that of the Ross worm, Sabellaria spinulosa.
- Lisa has been responsible for the image library and taking photos of specimens, and provided many of the photos used in the MESL Marine Macrofauna Genus Trait Handbook/online resource (2008, 2010).
- In April 2010 Lisa participated in the Community Consultation workshop for the Review of Systematics and Taxonomy at University College London.
