CURRENT PROJECTS

2003/2004 MIRO funded research project assessing the impacts of dredging and associated overboard screening on marine benthic communities. This project included a detailed study of the settlement profiles and 'footprint' of discharged materials using conventional water sampling, ADCP and seabed mounted water samplers. Seabed topography, bathymetry, surface sediment structure and particle size analysis was also studied in great detail to be examined in relation to biological community structure. In the same area the benthic and epibenthic communities were quantitatively surveyed using Hamon grabs and beam trawls in addition to in-situ underwater photographs. Advanced GIS mapping and statistical community analysis was combined with the geophysical data in order to interpret our findings. Results have allowed us to develop and validate predictive models describing the impacts associated with marine aggregate dredging. A Non-Technical summary of the project can be obtained by clicking HERE. A full copy of the report can be sent out upon request via phone or email at a charge of £10.00.
2003/2004 Biological Resource survey of lower Humber Estuary. An Intertidal, benthic and epibenthic monitoring programme for Millennium Inorganic Chemicals. Ongoing since 1986.
2003 Environmental Appraisal of Proposed Wind farm Site:North Sea - Triton Knoll, 2003. Client: National Wind Power Limited.

2003 Environmental Appraisal of Proposed Cable Landfalls (Thames Estuary-Shingles & Greater Dowsing), 2003. Client: National Wind Power Limited.
2003 Dr. Newell has given evidence at a Public Inquiry in February 2003 on the impacts of reclamation, capital and maintenance dredging programmes and operation of the port on the marine resources. A feature of this work has been the close collaboration between MESL and the engineering consultants in developing proposals to minimise impacts on coastal marine resources of conservation and economic significance.
2002/2003 MESL led the Environmental Impact Assessment for a North Sea aggregate licence application for Hanson Aggregates Marine Limited. This involves working closely with our client to draw up Terms of Reference and Scoping documents for their approval, as well as completion of both benthic and epibenthic/fisheries surveys and consequential reports. These MESL authored reports and others authored by specialists in their fields i.e. archaeology, coastal erosion, collision and risk analysis, has been drawn together by MESL into a final Environmental Statement to comply with the EC Environment Directive No. 97/11/EC.
2002 Marine Ecological Surveys have recently completed a research project funded by the British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) investigating the impacts of marine aggregate extraction at a site in the Southern North Sea. This Report will be available shortly on the BMAPA website. An e-mail request link for electronic and hard copy versions of this report will be available on the BMAPA website.
2001/2002 A major project for 2001/2002 has been a complete resource evaluation and impact assessment for the proposed London Gateway port in the Thames estuary, UK. This involved MESL in carrying out a complete fisheries resource and benthic biological study for this project.
